Microsoft has recently revolutionized Windows, significantly, for the first time since Windows 95. Yes, every version in between had its quirks, differences, flaws, advantages, etc. 95 was the first OS that essentially eliminated the old DOS prompt on the computer. Previously, Windows ran as an edition to MSDOS. With Windows 95, we got the Start button, and everything that would come with it.
Windows 98, Me, NT, XP, Vista & 7 would expand on this in different ways, adding features, fixing bugs, etc. While Windows does have its flaws, security concerns, and limitations, it is still a generally decent OS, out of the box. Because of market share, and some of the "convenience" features (ActiveX, for instance), it does need a little work. A security program of some sorts is always a good idea. Microsoft does offer a base defender, and many ISP's also offer some form of "basic" coverage for virus protection. But "free" coverage is not always going to be "excellent" coverage. It's a good idea to invest in something, if you spend a considerable time on your PC.
In October, I wrote a short piece about Windows 8. While I still a penguin fan (Linux, not Pittsburgh!), I've tinkered about with the beta of Windows 8 in a virtual machine (this is like a computer, within a computer, for simulation or additional functionality). I must admit that I didn't push Win8 too hard in there. I'm not really much of a gamer, these days, so I couldn't test it out that much with regard to gaming. I could see it taking a bit of getting used to, but it seemed fairly customizable, to meet the needs of the user.
The sale on this at Staples is this week, and likely will return to the regular price come Sunday, so if you're reading this after 12/8/2012, don't be surprised if the price isn't what I cited it. Others may have specials after this time, as well. If you were considering upgrading your computer a bit (or your kids', spouse's, office's, friend's etc) this season, then this may be a good deal for you. It can be purchased as a gift, and should easily fall within the return window in case it's not desired, or is a duplicate.

Windows 8 is designed to work with touchscreen displays (now becoming more common in notebooks, tablets (Windows Surface), and desktop monitors. However, it still works well with the traditional keyboard and mouse.
